Room 4 Class Blog

Room 4 carried out a tree survey for maths. We wanted to find out how many trees we have around our school. We used tally marks to count the trees. We used the book Which Native Tree? to identify the native trees we have around our school. Native trees are important because they are home to native species such as tui, kereru, puriri moths, gekos, and even bats.

Today was our last day of Tennis this term. We played doubles tennis, where there are two players on each side of the tennis court. If you win the first rally you get to stay in and challenge the champions. Then if you win two rallies in a row you become the champions. To become the champion you need to use your tennis skills such as holding the racket correctly and hitting the ball over the net. You also need to watch the ball and move towards it. I really enjoyed playing doubles tennis because our team work was great and we got to play lots of rallies.

Well done to everyone who participated in our Athletics day for 2019. There were many exciting events including a sausage sizzle and a 100 metre Sprints in the afternoon. What was your favourite event?

Room 4 have been learning tennis skills this term. Our tennis instructor Pete has taught us how to hold our tennis racket and hit the ball over the net. We are also learning how to serve the ball over the net. When you serve you need to hit the ball across the court diagonally. Now that we know lots of the basic skills we will be able to have a rally. A rally is when you hit the ball over the net back and fourth with your partner.

Room 4 wanted to teach Stan walker how to make a delicious healthy homemade meal so he didn't need to order Uber Eats all the time. Eating fast food can get expensive and it isn't as healthy as eating a home cooked meal. Students researched how to make pizza dough and then shared the recipe with the class. Then we invented our own different pizza toppings. Our teacher encouraged us to try some toppings that we'd never tried before like mushrooms, parsley and pineapple. Today Room 4 picked up rubbish around our school. We discovered there was a lot of plastic, paper, foil, and cardboard rubbish around the Junior playground and on the field. If we didn't pick it up it might blow out to sea and hurt sea creatures. Our school is also home to birds and insects and rubbish isn't good for them either. We sorted the waste into groups on a graph. The graph showed us that we have way too much foil and plastic rubbish. Sadly the plastic and foil wrappers are coming from us humans. They come from the food in our lunchboxes because the factories wrap all the food in plastic and foil and then we buy it from the supermarket. When we don't put the wrappers in the rubbish it is called littering. What can we do at PBS and at home to help fix this problem?

Room 4 designed and constructed some crazy shoes as part of our Technology Inquiry. We wanted to show them off on the cat walk. Thanks Room 2 for coming along and modelling some of our wacky shoes and being a great audience. Which shoes are your favourite? Where would you wear them?

  Congratulations to our Juniors for competing in our School Gymnastics Competition. They performed their floor, vault, and beam routines to a high standard and the students pictured below received the highest combined scores to earn their ribbons for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place.

We had a couple of different Moon projects taking place in Room 4 this term. They showed great team work and focus. Well done teaching the class the different Moon phases. Now we can watch out for them in the night sky during the month: new moon, waxing crescent, first quarter, waxing gibbous, full moon, waning gibbous, last quarter, and waning crescent.

The Star Inquiry group were amazed to learn about our star the sun and the many other stars out there in our Milky Way galaxy. Our class loved learning about different constellations that you can see at night in the Southern Hemisphere, such as The Southern Cross, Scorpius or Maui's Hook, Matariki, and Orion. Thanks for sharing your learning.

The crew of the Exploration Inquiry group wanted to explore space. They decided to make a Mars Rover. They tested it in different terrains and were very happy when the wheels rolled.

Here are photos of the 3D Solar System Inquiry groups working together to create their 3D solar systems. They wrote their own project instructions, carried them out, and presented their project in front of the class. 

Room 4 are looking very confident demonstrating all that they've learned this term in Gymnastics. They loved their lessons with gym coach Stephen who encourage them to challenge themselves each week. Everyone had different strengths and favourite activities, thanks Stephen for providing a great programme.

Sisilia graduated from Reading Recovery. Well done with all your hard work this term. Mrs Salmon and I are very proud of you!  Keira wrote an awesome tribute to Hiwi the Kiwi and won herself a fishing rod. She is hoping her grandma will take her fishing these holidays.
